GREAT HALLINGBURY HISTORY REPORT
Report to Annual Parish Meeting 2012

The Great Hallingbury Local History Society continues to thrive. Our meetings regularly attract between 20 and 30 members with a few visitors as well.

We maintain our programme of speakers on a broad variety of topics. Neither do we limit our time frame. This year we have enjoyed topics from 1066 – Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask through the History of Copped Hall and History through Famous People in Essex as well as the history of commercial activity which constitutes The Stort Story. Our most recent meeting proved popular when we moved into the twentieth century and had a speaker on the History of Duxford.

2011 was a landmark year for the History Society in that, with the support of the Parish Council, we finally brought to fruition our project to produce a village sign for Great Hallingbury. This was unveiled by our MP in September and attended by around 50 people who then enjoyed wine, coffee and refreshments in the Village Hall, by courtesy of the WI. I’m delighted to say that I have only heard good comments about it.

We plan to continue along a similar path in the coming year with speakers on the History and Restoration of Hylands House, the Religious Houses of Essex, large country houses or Keepers, Cockneys and Kitchen Maids and Barges on the Blackwater already in our schedule.

We are always delighted to welcome visitors and new members to enjoy not only our speakers, but our renowned refreshments as well.
